Lavalon's flag is flown for the first time.
Lavalon was established on the 4th of August 2002 by Ciaron Broeck. Originally titled the Independent Principality of Lavalon, the micronation soon ceased to function as Broeck participated in a variety of other micronational projects.

A year late the micronation was reestablished as the Sovereign Principality of Lavalon. The Sovereign Principality claimed of Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The act ofbecoming a citizen in the Sovereign Principality involved signing a "Declaration of Formation and Sovereignty" which read, in part:

Whereas a nation is a community of sentiment;
Whereas the right to sovereignty of any nation is only legitimately founded upon and derived from the consent of the people who comprise the nation;
Whereas the right of all people to a nationality and the right of all people to change their nationality is enshrined in Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is here considered self evident;
Whereas a person’s nationality is derived from there own definition of self and is not externally imposed condition;
We the undersigned do declare the formation of, and our identity with, the Sovereign Principality of Lavalon.

The Sovereign Principality was a micronation of high idealism. An absolutist "provisional charter" was soon replaced by a system of direct democracy, in which the Prince was elected and recallable by the people.

The Sovereign Principality also staked a variety of real world territorial claims, based upon the house holds and farm holdings of several citizens of the Principality.

Part way into 2004 the Sovereign Principality lapsed into inactivity as Broeck pursued academic advancement.

Coup Years

One citizen who was keen to perpetuate Lavalon was Matthew Vasroixe. In April 2004, In conjunction with Pardriac Nevin (who supplied Lavalon's web hosting), Martin declared a coup and proclaimed the Republic of Lavalon.

The Republic of Lavalon was initially opposed by Lavalon founder Ciaron Broeck. Reportedly Broeck was not so much upset with Vasroixe's decision to seize power, but with his decision to "start from sratch" with the newly declared Republic of Lavalon.

Broeck went on to found the Kingdom of Breuddwyd, and eventually became reconciled to the destruction of the Sovereign Principality.

The Republic of Lavalon attracted several new citizens, including some from the Empire of Natopia.

The Republic was struck by numerous crises, centering around personality clashes between Matthew Martin and newer Lavalonians.

After numerous re-foundations, periods of inactivity, an absorption into Natopia and secession, the Republic of Lavalon lapsed into what appeared to be a final inactivity.

The Provisional Committee

The Provisional Committee for Lavalon was established by Jason Mckerra in November 2008. Mckerra had the blessing, but not participation of Lavalonian founder Ciaron Broeck.

The Provisional Committee argued that the Lavalonian micronation never ceased to exist. Harking back to the argument that Broeck presented when founding Lavalon, Mckerra argued that Lavalon was a community of sentiment, and continued to exist so long as a single citizen held the concept dear to heart.

The Provisional Committee was billed as a scoping exersize, to determine whether there was enough interest to form a new government for the existant Lavalonian micronation. Ultimately it appeared there was insufficient interest. By January 2009 the forum was closed and all that remained on the Lavalon.info domain was a flag and email contact.

Mckerra initially intended to retain the Lavalon.info domain as a memorial to the Lavalonian micronation. However in April 2009 he had a change of heart.

On the 23rd of July 2009, Jason Mckerra proclaimed a new Republican government of Lavalon, with himself as Provisional Consul.

The New Republic

The current Republic of Lavalon was proclaimed on the 23rd of July 2009. The new Republic of Lavalon draws on the traditions of both the Principality of Lavalon founded by Ciaron Broeck and the Republic of Lavalon founded by Matthew Vasroixe.

Commenting on the first year of the new Republic, Consul Jason Mckerra said:

In the past year, sixteen new people joined our community. For the first time our government set out to raise money, and spend it. We issued membership cards. We contributed to the microfinance charity Kiva, and assisted small businesses in Boliva.
On our seventh anniversary, we produced promotional post cards, which were mailed to micronationalists all over the world. We produced a Lavalonian flag, which has now been shown in micronations across Australia.

Consul Jason Mckerra has floated plans for the future which include establishing a Lavalonian University, loaning more money through microfinance charity Kiva, and saving towards a long term goal of buying land for the Republic of Lavalon to exercise control over.

Government

The head of state is known as the Consul, the current Consul is Jason Mckerra. The Consul appoints ministers with the approval of the Senate. Current ministers include Zachary Klass, Minister for Language, Brandon Sullivan, Minister for Development, and Harry Spooner, Minister to North America.

The legislative function is vested in a Senate, which at present consists of all citizens. The Senate has been debating a new Lavalonian constitution for some months.

Diplomacy

The Republic of Lavalon embraces the concept of Declarative Statehood, and as such de facto recognises all entities that call themselves micronations and conduct the kinds of activities a micronation is entitled to conduct.

The Republic of Lavalon seeks formal diplomatic relations with like minded micronational entities. As of the 11th of August 2009 the Republic of Lavalon maintains a diplomatic relationship with the Holy Empire of Réunion, the Free Community of Pasargada and the SPQR.

In the past Lavalon has maintained relations with the Realm of Strathclyde, the Confederation of Toaka and the Duchy of Falkenstein.

Flag Tour

Inspired by the Formori flag tour, the Republic of Lavalon has been sending it's flags to micronations and national landmarks around Australia.

In future Lavalon plans to send it's flag to citizens all around the world.

Taxation

The Republic is developing a "voluntary tax system" based on the taxation of senior government officials. Mckerra has stated that the aim of the tax system is to develop a pool of funds for the Republic to disburse, thus creating a greater "power incentive" for people to become involved.

At present the only individual taxed is the consul, who pays a $10USD levy in order to retain his position.

All expenditure is authorised by the Senate, and the Senate is currently consider it's first annual budget.
